Sedimentaciones by Ingrid Hernández
Sedimentaciones by Ingrid Hernández
This project emerges from more than two decades of artistic practice addressing the self-built neighborhoods and informal settlements of Tijuana, Baja California, where the artist was born and has lived her entire life. Second-hand materials discarded in the United States are transported to Tijuana and absorbed into the local construction market, where they are repurposed to build homes alongside waste from maquiladoras. These overlapping materials accumulate new uses and meanings, producing an unfinished landscape in constant transformation. In Sedimentations, the artist compares this process of self-construction to sedimentation: the gradual deposition of materials that transforms a surface, reshaping both the home and the visual character of the city.
